When it comes to healthy snacking, Mediterranean-style homemade hummus is a great way to go. Many people reach for the store-bought, pre-packaged hummus out of convenience, but this product contains so many added ingredients and preservatives that are not necessary to make a delicious and healthy snack.
Take a look at the ingredients in the Sabra® Classic Hummus: Cooked Chickpeas (Chickpeas [Garbanzos], Water), Tahini (Ground Sesame), Soybean Oil, Garlic, Salt, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate Added to Maintain Freshness, Natural Flavors
Soybean oil? Citric acid? Potassium sorbate? And what are these natural flavors they speak of?
Below I have provided the recipe for one of my all time favorite snacks; a delicous, WHOLESOME, all natural, and preservative-free hummus. I absolutely love the intense sesame flavor in this hummus that you do not get in the pre-packaged, store-bought brands. The acidity of the lemon perfectly balances out the creamy texture of the chickpeas, and the cumin brings everything together to create a harmonious union of these tantalizing ingredients. Eaten with fresh veggies, this snack is absolutely irresistible!
- 2 (15 ounce) cans chickpeas, one drained, one with liquid
- 1/4 cup raw sesame seads, ground
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice from an organic lemon
- 4 garlic cloves, peeled, minced
- 2 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground cumin
- salt and pepper to taste
Grind sesame seeds with a mortar and pestle until a dry paste forms. Mince garlic. Place ground sesame seeds, garlic, and remaining ingredients in blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Serve with fresh vegetables such as carrots, celery, bell peppers, etc. Enjoy!
